Hedging in Grain Markets: A Risk Management Tool for Farmers
Farmers gathered at the 2026 Ag in Motion (AIM) show near Langham, Saskatchewan, for an insightful fireside chat hosted by RBC. Nathan Kuhn, a seasoned farmer from Reward, shared his experiences with grain price hedging, offering valuable lessons learned over more than a decade of involvement in commodity markets.
Kuhn emphasized that individuals contemplating hedging should reconsider how they approach the subject. He noted that the most useful insights came not from courses or online videos but from his broker, Tyler Durst, a commodity futures specialist with the Simpson/Caputo Group at RBC Dominion Securities.
Kuhn's passion for hedging stems from its role in addressing anxiety caused by fluctuating grain prices. He articulated how hedging provides peace of mind, allowing him to manage unexpected weather events or poor crop yields.
Durst stressed the importance of being prepared for scenarios such as margin calls that might disrupt cash flow. Kuhn pointed out specific complexities associated with different crops, including canola's illiquid market and wheat's notoriously complicated landscape.
