Henry Hub Futures Spike 5% Amid Warmer Weather Forecasts
Natural gas futures surged nearly 5% on Monday after breaking a month-long technical pattern that had constrained its upside, putting $3.00 in view.
The September Henry Hub contract snapped out of a multi-week malaise to mount double-digit gains through midday, driven by warmer weather forecasts and the break above a monthlong pattern.
The positioning change was largely due to heavy speculative short positioning that had accumulated after five consecutive weeks of losses. Crowded shorts covering into a technical breakout produced exactly the kind of move that looks like conviction but is actually mechanics.
However, the market's view remains bearish, as evidenced by the heavier-than-expected 33 Bcf injection into storage for the week ended July 31. This reinforces the idea that supplies remain ample despite easing production and strengthening LNG feedgas demand.
The fundamental setup is clear: production near 110 Bcf/d and a storage surplus suggest that the rally may be short-lived, with $3.00 serving as the level to test whether this is a breakout or a squeeze.
