Hezbollah Clashes with Israel as US-Iran Negotiations Reach Deadlock
Violence erupted in Lebanon on August 15 as Israeli forces struck at Hezbollah positions, killing 11 people and injuring several others. The attacks were in retaliation for a Hezbollah attack that injured three Israeli soldiers the day before.
The fighting has further complicated negotiations between Iran and the US, which are set to expire on August 17. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that an agreement with Oman would not translate into the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and is separate from discussions with the US.
Iranian oil exports have been severely curtailed by a US blockade, but Tehran has shown no signs of yielding on its nuclear program or relinquishing control over the strait. The US plans to hit Iran's economy hard, according to President Donald Trump, who also stated that he would consider declaring the Strait of Hormuz a territory of the United States.
