Hindalco Surges on Metal Price Rally
Hindalco's earnings skyrocketed by 75% in the June quarter due to a surge in aluminum and copper prices. The metals and mining arm of India's Aditya Birla Group benefited from benchmark aluminum prices averaging 43% higher than their year-earlier level on the London Metal Exchange, while copper gained 41%. This price hike was largely driven by supply concerns linked to the Middle East conflict.
The company's scale and diversification also played a crucial role in its success. Hindalco owns Novelis, a subsidiary in the US, which gives it exposure to both raw-metal rallies and downstream manufacturing demand. Despite some buyers holding back due to copper's high price, Hindalco still delivered a strong quarter.
The company is leveraging this cash flow to expand its operations, adding 300,000 tons of annual copper-smelting capacity at Dahej and increasing aluminum production. This growth focuses on meeting demand in the Indian market, which saw 3% growth in aluminum demand for the quarter, driven by autos.
