Hong Kong Gold Imports Soar to 11-Year High Amid Renewed Investor Appetite
Hong Kong's gold imports reached an 11-year high in June, with the city receiving 150.48 tonnes of physical bullion and semi-processed forms, according to data from the Census and Statistics Department.
This represents a nearly 29% month-on-month surge, marking the highest monthly volume since late 2014.
Analysts attribute this increase in demand to renewed investor appetite for gold, particularly after recent market corrections. Prashant Bhayani, BNP Paribas Wealth Management's chief investment officer for Asia, notes that a stronger yuan makes gold prices more attractive.
Bhayani also speculates that the setup of Hong Kong's gold clearing system may have contributed to this uptick in demand, as banks purchased gold in advance to meet investor needs.
