Hormuz Attacks Escalate Tensions Between Iran and the US
Two oil tankers carrying Saudi crude were attacked while transiting through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday evening. The near-simultaneous incidents represent a further escalation in the threat environment within the Omani corridor, according to shipping intelligence firm Marisks.
The tankers, Sidr and Senegal Prosperity, each loaded 2 million barrels of Saudi crude at the Juaymah terminal last week. They were struck by unknown projectiles while sailing out of the Strait of Hormuz, with all crew members reported safe.
The incidents come as tensions between Iran and the US continue to simmer. Efforts by mediators including Qatar and Oman to broker a deal to reopen the strait have so far proven inconclusive.
Oil prices gained on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump threatened further strikes against Iran, following the first exchanges of fire since late July.
