Hormuz Chokepoint Crises: Global LNG Supplies in Peril
The global energy system is facing its biggest crisis since the Middle East war and LNG supply disruption in 2026. At the heart of this crisis lies a critical infrastructure weakness that has been underestimated for decades: the Strait of Hormuz, which handles approximately one-fifth of globally traded liquefied natural gas (LNG) and roughly 20% of global crude oil trade.
The narrow Strait of Hormuz is a chokepoint with no viable alternatives. LNG requires purpose-built infrastructure, including liquefaction plants, specialized tankers, and regasification terminals, which makes it difficult to reroute or bypass the corridor. The current disruption has already led to an estimated 19-20% near-term global LNG supply contraction.
The crisis is compounded by seasonal demand peaks, elevated freight costs from rerouted vessels, and financing constraints among price-sensitive importers. LNG spot prices have doubled between January and July 2026, reaching $20-$22 per million British thermal units (MMBtu). This repricing reflects a war risk premium, vessel diversion costs, and the option value of securing supply during periods of intense competition.
The impact is not limited to any one region. The Asia-Pacific absorbs the largest share of globally traded LNG, with no adequate pipeline gas alternatives. Japan has reactivated coal-fired generation capacity, while Pakistan continues paying elevated spot premiums despite financial constraints. China's dual-architecture import system gives it a supply diversification buffer that other countries lack.
Europe is also facing its own challenges. The continent is importing record volumes of Russian LNG at the same time its storage refill rates are suppressed by high spot prices. This paradox will end in 2027, when the EU's ban on Russian gas imports takes effect.
