Hormuz Concerns Drive Oil Prices Higher
Crude oil prices have increased due to concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy routes. Brent crude traded around $83.34 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate rose to about $77.81 in early trading.
The latest concern is that reopening the Strait of Hormuz may not mean a full return to normal shipping. Iran and Oman are discussing conditions for vessels using the strait, with Iran's preliminary proposal potentially restricting ships it considers hostile and imposing fees or penalties.
Oil prices remain highly sensitive to any change in expectations for shipping access due to roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas being normally moved through the strait before the conflict began.
