The Strait of Hormuz crisis has led to a historic surge in oil shipping costs, with rates for very large crude carriers (VLCCs) on the Middle East-to-Asia route approaching $500,000 per day.
This unprecedented spike follows intensified Iranian military activity in the Strait, the world's most critical oil chokepoint through which approximately one-fifth of global petroleum shipments transit.
