Hormuz Diplomacy Sends Oil Prices Sliding Amid Ongoing Security Risks
Oil prices declined further on Tuesday as investors weighed the prospects of a diplomatic breakthrough over the Strait of Hormuz against lingering security threats in the Middle East.
The Brent crude futures fell by $0.37, or 0.5%, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude lost $0.53, adding to sharp losses from the previous two sessions.
The decline was attributed to signs of progress in negotiations involving Iran and Oman over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most critical oil transit route.
The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for global energy markets, with nearly 20 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum liquids moving through it in 2024, equivalent to about one-fifth of global petroleum liquids consumption and roughly a quarter of the world's seaborne oil trade.
