Hormuz Disruptions Spark Indian Refiner Rush to Russian Crude
Indian refiners have dramatically increased their purchases of Russian Urals crude in recent months, driven by geopolitical uncertainty and a desire for supply security. According to trade sources, Indian buyers valued Russian crude in 2026 specifically because it had demonstrated supply consistency in an environment where Middle Eastern delivery timelines became unreliable.
The Strait of Hormuz, the world's most strategically consequential oil chokepoint, played a significant role in this shift. Renewed U.S. military engagement against Iran in mid-2026 generated fresh uncertainty over tanker transit through the Strait, causing Indian refiners to accelerate purchases of Russian Urals as a stable feedstock.
Indian state refiners have invested meaningfully in infrastructure required to handle Urals-grade crude at scale, including established payment mechanisms operating outside dollar-denominated channels and dedicated shipping and insurance arrangements developed specifically for Russian tanker logistics. This has created operational lock-in at both the commercial and technical level, making Russian crude a pre-built procurement pathway that reduces execution risk during supply disruptions.
