Hormuz Impasse Keeps Oil Market Calm Despite Disruption

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil chokepoint, remains severely impaired due to ongoing tensions between the US and Iran. Despite this, crude prices have remained relatively calm, trading around $90 per barrel, which is lower than expected given the prolonged disruption.

The explanation lies in various mitigating measures deployed since the conflict began, including alternative export routes, strategic reserves, global trade flows reshuffled, and consumers adjusting to higher prices. Weak Chinese crude demand has also provided a cushion against severe shortages.

Hormuz's reduced capacity is evident in data from Kpler, which shows that crude flows through the Strait have averaged 6.1 million barrels per day, down from 15 million under normal conditions. The shortage of incoming tankers and storage issues are significant concerns.
