Hormuz Negotiations Stall as Brent Crude Surges to $84.38
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern for international oil prices, as negotiations between Iran and Oman to establish a secure shipping channel have yet to yield clear progress. Brent crude oil futures rose 2.65% to $84.38 a barrel, while WTI crude oil futures increased by 2.22% to $78.75 a barrel.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the current ceasefire understanding has not been effectively implemented, and thus there is no basis for resuming direct negotiations with the US. He emphasized that Iran will only engage in direct talks if the US stops violating the previous agreement and takes remedial measures.
The regional security situation remains unstable, with Yemen's Houthi rebels launching attacks on refining facilities in Saudi Arabia's Jizan region and a tanker operated by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company being attacked near the Strait of Hormuz. Westpac believes that as the war in Iran enters its sixth month, there remains significant uncertainty in the Middle East.
