Hormuz Reopening Hopes Lift Oil Prices as Regional Tensions Remain High
Oil prices surged by over 1% on Monday as traders anticipated the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments. Brent crude rose to $84.65 per barrel, while WTI crude climbed to $78.99 per barrel.
The uptick in oil prices comes after a significant decline of more than 7% last week due to expectations that Iran and Oman were nearing an agreement to restore shipping through the waterway. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that Tehran is demanding additional concessions from Washington before finalizing the deal.
The uncertainty surrounding Hormuz has been compounded by recent attacks involving Saudi Arabia, another key oil producer. The Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for an attack on Saudi Aramco's Jazan refinery, further heightening concerns over oil security in the region.
