Hormuz Strait Attacks Escalate as Second Qatari LNG Tanker Struck

A second Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz on July 31, 2026. The GasLog Shanghai, operated by Monaco-based shipowner GasLog Ltd on behalf of QatarEnergy, lost propulsion after being struck in its engine room.

The attack comes less than a month after another Qatari LNG vessel, Al Rekayyat, was targeted in the same strait. That incident led to a suspension of Qatari LNG shipments through the strait before their gradual resumption at the end of July.

No claim of responsibility has been made for the latest attack, which follows a series of incidents targeting regional gas infrastructure, including a drone strike on gas installations at the Egyptian port of Damietta in recent days.
