Hormuz Strait Talks Gain Momentum as Global Energy Hinges on Waterway
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global energy trade, is on track to fully restore maritime traffic after Iran and Oman continued negotiations. The talks involve not only the two nations but also representatives from Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt, as well as US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
The central shipping corridor was closed due to naval mines reportedly deployed in the area. However, the UK, France, and several European countries have expressed readiness to support mine-clearing operations once the security situation allows.
The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for international trade as approximately 20% of global oil supplies and around 25% of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports pass through it. The narrow waterway separates Iran from Oman, with some areas having a shipping channel width of only two miles on each side.
