Hormuz Strait Tensions Escalate as Iran and US Trade Blows
The Strait of Hormuz is at the center of escalating tensions between Iran and the United States. The US Central Command reported that it had struck Iranian targets, including air defense sites, radar systems, and mine laying capabilities, as part of its retaliation for Iran's 'attempted attacks' on commercial shipping.
US officials claim to have struck two tankers with missiles launched from drones, while Iran has accused the US of attacking compliant oil vessels. The IRGC has threatened 'additional punitive measures' against maritime companies that violate established legal routes and place their vessels at the disposal of foreign powers.
The Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council condemned Iran's attack on positions in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan, calling it a 'dangerous escalation' and a grave violation of international law. The IRGC has also increased its list of 'non-compliant vessels' to 57 total, up from 46 last week.
US President Donald Trump wrote online that he is not trying to force Iran to the bargaining table, but rather wants to maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz and collapse their economy. He even jokingly suggested renaming it 'Trump Strait.'
