Hormuz Strait Traffic Plummets as US and Iran Trade Threats
Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed significantly over the weekend, with fewer than 20 vessels passing through as Iran and the United States trade threats.
According to data from Kpler cited by Reuters, only four tankers made the journey on Sunday, down from 16 that passed through on Friday. Over the past week, a total of 103 vessels entered the strait while 89 exited it, with 45% being tankers and 56% of those being oil tankers.
The U.S. Treasury Secretary threatened an 'economic D-Day' against Iran, saying that President Donald Trump has significantly dismantled Iran's military capabilities and weakened its nuclear program. In response, Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary, Mohsen Rezaei, said that if the economic war continues, not a single drop of oil will be exported through the strait or from anywhere in the Persian Gulf.
