Hormuz Talks Ease Oil Price Fears Ahead of Key Inflation Data
Oil prices dipped on Tuesday after reports emerged that the US and Iran may be close to reaching a deal to partially reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for crude shipments. Regional officials signaled progress in talks, with Pakistan's defense minister Khawaja Asif stating that the two sides are near 'some sort of arrangement', while a Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson noted that discussions on a partial reopening are progressing.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key chokepoint for crude shipments, and any disruption to its flow can significantly impact oil prices. WTI September futures slipped 0.24% to $81.93 a barrel, while Brent October fell 0.7% to $87.12. Meanwhile, investors leaned towards more defensive positions elsewhere, with Comex gold for December delivery up 0.8% to $4,454 an ounce.
