Hormuz Talks Intensify as US Naval Blockade Chokes Off Iranian Oil Imports
The Strait of Hormuz has been at the center of diplomatic efforts between Iran and its Gulf neighbors, particularly Qatar, as tensions escalate over a US naval blockade that's choking off oil imports to Iran.
In a bid to ease tensions, Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Thursday. The talks came amid a week of intense diplomacy involving Oman and Pakistani officials seeking ways to reopen the strategic waterway.
The US has imposed a naval blockade on Iran amid a domestic shortfall, preventing the country from importing enough petrol to cover its needs. Iranian Vice President Mohammad Jafar Ghaempanah said the blockade had prevented his country from importing petrol due to insufficient domestic production.
