Hormuz Tensions Send Brent Prices Soaring as IEA Warns of Deficit Risk
The Strait of Hormuz oil crisis has pushed Brent crude prices towards a weekly gain of around 12% as tensions in the region continue to rise. The International Energy Agency (IEA) warned that oil security remains a critical problem, with IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol stating 'oil security is still a critical issue' and expressing concern over potential supply disruptions.
Birol noted that a two-week ceasefire had briefly raised hopes for stability in the region before collapsing due to US-Iran talks breaking down. He stated that if the crisis continues, oil markets could move into a deficit zone, which would be most damaging for oil-importing developing nations.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE are building new pipelines to reduce their dependence on the Strait of Hormuz, but these will take time. The IEA has flagged the Bab el-Mandeb Strait as an increasingly important bypass route, with threats to it compounding supply security concerns.
