Hormuz Tensions Send Crude Oil Prices Soaring
Crude oil prices have increased globally due to rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait is a critical oil route, through which about 20% of the world's oil and gas passes.
The recent news from Iran has sparked concerns that the Strait might be closed, leading investors to fear a potential supply disruption.
As a result, Brent crude jumped 3.8% on Thursday to close at $82.49 per barrel, while American WTI crude rose by 2.8% to reach $77.29 per barrel.
This surge in oil prices is expected to impact India significantly, as the country imports over 85% of its crude oil requirements from abroad.
With oil prices hovering around $80-85 per barrel for an extended period, the Indian government may have to spend more dollars on imports, potentially leading to a higher current account deficit and inflation pressure.
