Hormuz Tensions Send European Gas Prices Soaring
European natural gas prices have surged to their highest levels since early 2023 due to rising tensions in the Middle East. The Dutch TTF benchmark gas futures rose above €75 per megawatt-hour, while UK wholesale gas prices climbed to around 186 pence per therm as traders factored a greater geopolitical risk premium into the market.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial transit route for global liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments. A sustained disruption to tanker traffic through this waterway could limit LNG availability and intensify competition between European and Asian buyers for cargoes from alternative suppliers.
The jump in gas prices has revived concerns over inflation and the outlook for interest rates across Europe. Higher energy costs could increase expenses for households and companies while adding to broader inflationary pressures, potentially making monetary policy decisions more difficult.
