Hormuz Tensions Spark Rare LNG Transfer Outside Strait

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers are finding ways to circumvent the Strait of Hormuz, despite ongoing tensions in the region. According to satellite images seen by Bloomberg, two LNG vessels were spotted conducting a ship-to-ship transfer outside the strait on Saturday.

The LNG Enugu, owned by BW Gas LNG Carriers, was docked near Sohar on the Gulf of Oman and anchored parallel to another vessel, identified as the Mraweh owned by Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. Ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg shows that the LNG Enugu has been circling the Gulf of Oman in recent days.

The transfer is a rare occurrence due to the technical challenges involved in keeping LNG super-chilled during any switch. If confirmed, this would be the first known instance of LNG from inside the Persian Gulf being moved to a different vessel outside Hormuz, according to Bloomberg's analysis.
