Hormuz Uncertainty Drives Brent Crude Above $83
The price of Brent crude oil has surpassed $83 per barrel as uncertainty surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has resurfaced. The waterway, a crucial energy corridor, is under scrutiny due to Iran's consideration of conditions that could restrict access for vessels associated with countries it considers hostile.
Iran's proposed restrictions, which include penalties equivalent to 20% of the value of cargo for ships found violating them, have introduced fresh uncertainty into the market. The Strait of Hormuz handles approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows, making any prolonged restrictions or additional fees a significant concern for supply and prices.
The US has pushed for vessels to transit without extra charges, while Oman has discussed fees ranging from 3% to 7%. The ongoing discussions have led to a rebound in crude prices, with Brent gaining 80 cents or 0.97% to $83.29 per barrel, and WTI advancing 64 cents or 0.83% to $77.93.
Despite the gains, Brent and WTI are still on track for an 8% weekly decline, reflecting earlier losses as traders responded to changing expectations surrounding Middle East supply.
