Hormuz Uncertainty Sends Oil Prices Soaring Above $100 a Barrel
The Strait of Hormuz has become a central point in the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran, raising concerns about oil prices. The strait, through which 20 million barrels of oil pass daily, is crucial to global energy supplies. With uncertainty around vessel movements due to 'dark crossings,' where tankers switch off their identification systems, traders are struggling to estimate actual oil flows.
Recent estimates have differed dramatically, with U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright reporting over 17 million barrels crossed on August 31 under U.S. Navy supervision, while shipping intelligence firm Kpler estimated around 6 million barrels crossed that day.
The uncertainty has pushed Brent crude above $100 a barrel for the first time since July, driven by renewed military escalation and concerns over Middle Eastern oil supplies.
