Houthi Attacks Disrupt Suez Canal Recovery Amid Red Sea Chaos

The Suez Canal's recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic has been disrupted by renewed attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels, threatening Egypt's efforts to revive traffic through the waterway.

The latest escalation comes after a series of attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea, with the Houthis targeting ships linked to Israel and its allies over the war in Gaza.

Vessel-tracking data from Kpler shows that only 11 commodity tankers passed through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on Sunday, the lowest daily volume recorded in several months.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait serves as the southern gateway to Egypt's Suez Canal, which carries a significant share of global seaborne trade and oil shipments between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
