Houthi Attacks Escalate Tensions in Middle East
The Houthis, an Iran-backed rebel group in Yemen, launched attacks on Sunday against a crucial Red Sea port and an oil facility in Saudi Arabia. The Mokha port, a key shipping hub for Yemen's internationally recognized government, was severely damaged along with commercial goods and food supplies. At least seven people were killed and 15 civilians injured in the attack.
The Houthis also targeted an Aramco refinery in the city of Jazan with a drone, according to their military spokesperson Yahya Saree. The Saudi Energy Ministry reported a fire at the facility without casualties, but did not specify the cause.
The attacks escalate tensions in the Middle East as Iran makes new demands for negotiations and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that an agreement on maritime routes through the strait may be reached, but the strait will not open until certain conditions are met.
