Houthi Attacks Spark Oil Price Surge Amid Escalating Regional Tensions
Houthi forces have announced that they attacked two Saudi tankers at the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, causing diversions and contributing to a surge in oil prices. The targeted vessels were reportedly carrying Saudi crude destined for India and oil bound for China.
Matthew Wright, principal freight analyst at Kpler, noted that while only two vessels have been affected so far, the response suggests that owners and operators are treating the threat seriously.
The Houthi forces' declaration of a naval blockade has had a significant impact on trade flows in the region. According to Reuters, twenty-seven vessels crossed the Red Sea chokepoint on Wednesday, down from 38 tanker crossings on Tuesday.
