Houthi Blockade Forces Oil Tankers to Reroute Through Cape of Good Hope

The Houthi rebels in Yemen have imposed a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia's energy exports, forcing eight oil tankers to change course. The Houthis claim that this is in response to a long-standing Saudi siege on the Houthi-ruled areas in Yemen. According to the Houthis, the tankers will now have to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, significantly lengthening their voyages to Asia.

The blockade has escalated tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, which has been leading a coalition to support the Yemeni government against Houthi advances. The Iran-backed group controls the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key transit point for global shipping that connects the Red Sea with Asia.
