Houthi Blockade Forces Saudi Oil Tankers to Take Detour

The Houthi group in Yemen has claimed that eight Saudi oil tankers were forced to reroute their journey via the Cape of Good Hope due to its maritime blockade. This move is part of the group's efforts to impose a blockade on Saudi Arabian vessels, according to Yahya Saree, the Houthi military spokesperson.

The diversion comes as Saudi Arabia and 13 other countries have formed a multinational maritime defense coalition aimed at safeguarding freedom of navigation, international trade, and energy supply routes in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden. The move is a response to escalating threats to commercial shipping in the region after the Houthi group declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia on July 20.

Riyadh has vowed to protect maritime traffic and respond to threats against international navigation. The creation of this coalition marks a significant escalation in the conflict between the Houthi group and Saudi Arabia, with both sides vying for control of strategic waterways.
