Houthi Missile Strike on Saudi Oil Facilities Escalates US-Iran War
The war between the US and Iran continues to escalate as Tehran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen fire missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia's oil facilities on the Red Sea. The attack marks a significant escalation of the conflict, which has already led to a stranglehold on exports of oil and raw materials for fertiliser, causing energy prices to soar.
Despite the US launching 13 consecutive waves of overnight air strikes since July 11 in response to Iran's attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, there have been no new US attacks reported. However, tentative signs indicate that Washington and Tehran are still talking via mediators and might return to more meaningful discussions.
The conflict has spread to other regions, with Russia's attempted conquest of Ukraine becoming entangled with the war between the US and Iran. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that Kyiv had achieved 'very strong results' with long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, hitting vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran.
