The conflict in Yemen has escalated significantly as the Iran-backed Houthi rebels launched a series of missile and drone attacks on government positions, killing at least 58 troops and injuring dozens. The attacks also wounded 11 civilians inside Saudi Arabia itself.

The Houthis claimed the attacks were in response to an alleged military buildup backed by neighboring Saudi Arabia, a key US ally and supporter of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.

Saudi officials accused the Houthis of indiscriminately shelling civilian areas, violating international humanitarian law. The coalition has vowed to take all necessary measures to protect civilians.

The escalation in Yemen is part of a broader regional confrontation between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed groups. US Central Command has been cooperating with Saudi forces in responding to drone attacks on oil facilities.
