Houthi Threat to Saudi Energy Hub Sparks Global Market Concern
The Houthi group has threatened Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure, potentially disrupting global oil markets and affecting gasoline prices ahead of the US midterm elections.
The Abqaiq facility, the world's largest crude oil processing plant, is responsible for stabilizing about 7% of the world's crude oil. Thomas Warrick, a former deputy assistant secretary for counterterrorism policy, described it as 'among the most important pieces of critical infrastructure on the planet'.
The facility, located in eastern Saudi Arabia, has been targeted by drones in recent attacks. According to Warrick, many of its components are custom-built and irreplaceable on a short timeline, making it vulnerable to disruption.
