Houthis Claim Drone Strike on Aramco Facility as Yemen Tensions Escalate
The Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have claimed responsibility for a drone strike on an Aramco oil facility in Jazan, Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast. The attack was allegedly in response to what the Houthis described as Saudi incursions into northwestern Yemen.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group had 'succeeded in targeting the Aramco refinery in Jazan with a drone,' claiming the strike was precise.
The attack comes amid a sharp escalation between the Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces, particularly in the strategic and oil-rich province of Marib. The Houthi offensive has intensified in recent days, with at least 58 government troops killed in missile and drone attacks on Marib last Thursday.
The trilateral defense agreement signed by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan just two days ago commits the three countries to treating an armed attack against any one of them as an attack against all three. However, it remains unclear whether this pact would require a military response to a Houthi drone attack, leaving the latest strike as an early test of how the newly established security partnership translates from a political commitment into action.
