Houthis' Iran-Backed Escalation Risks Yemen Truce Collapse

A recent escalation in Yemen's conflict has threatened to upend a 2022 truce and open another front in the Middle East, according to UN envoy Hans Grundberg.

The Houthis, backed by Iran, turned down an offer from the Saudi-backed internationally recognized government in Yemen to facilitate their travel on a non-Iranian airline. Instead, they proceeded with a flight operated by Mahan Air, forcing a Saudi airstrike that disabled Sanaa airport.

The Houthis have since attacked Abha airport and announced a blockade on Saudi shipping in the Red Sea. They also attacked Saudi vessels and oil facilities inside the kingdom, adding further disruption to the global economy.
