The Iran-aligned Houthis have advanced along Yemen's Red Sea coast and taken control of key strategic islands, including Mocha, which they seized on September 10. This move has raised concerns about freedom of navigation through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world's most important shipping routes.
The Houthis' gain in leverage over the strait gives their backer, Iran, a critical advantage in the war with the United States. It could also make it harder for President Donald Trump to find an exit from the conflict, which has hurt his Republican Party's electoral prospects ahead of the November midterms.
Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, relies on the Red Sea route since the Iran conflict effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz. The Houthis' control of the waterway could send oil prices surging if they gain control of it.
