Houthis Seize Key Port City in Yemen, Threatening Global Energy Supplies
The Iran-aligned Houthis have seized control of Yemen's port city of Mocha, posing a threat to global energy supplies. Military sources report that the Houthis have gained leverage over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world's most important shipping routes.
This development comes after US President Donald Trump said he expected the war in Yemen to end after the mid-term elections. However, the conflict continues to escalate, with tensions high on both sides.
The Houthis' control of Mocha and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could give their sponsor Iran a critical advantage in the war with the US, reducing supplies through a second major transit corridor and sending oil prices surging. Brent crude prices rose 3.5% to above $100 a barrel on Thursday on concern over disruption to supply routes.
The conflict has been ongoing since February, with both sides accusing each other of aggression. The Houthis have been supported by Iran in their fight against the Yemeni government and its allies, led by Saudi Arabia.
