Houthis Seize Key Red Sea Port, Threatening Global Shipping
The Iran-aligned Houthi militants have seized the key Red Sea port of Mokha in Yemen, giving them a stronger position along the country's western coast. The rapid advance has brought the Houthis closer to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which links the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
The capture of Mokha represents a major setback for Saudi-backed forces and raises concerns that the group may gain leverage over a route critical to global oil and commodity supplies. Houthi forces have pushed government troops south towards Dhubab, directly opposite Perim island at the entrance to the strait.
Control of the area could put the Houthis in a position to threaten maritime traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb, which is one of the world's most vital shipping routes. Any disruption to shipping through this strait could strain global energy and commodity markets already facing disruption elsewhere in the region.
