Houthis Seize Key Towns in Yemen as Conflict Escalates

The conflict in Yemen has escalated significantly as Houthi rebels seize key towns near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital waterway for global shipping.

The Houthis have taken control of the port city of Mokha, the town of Dhubab, and the island of Perim, all strategically located near the strait. These areas had been held by forces aligned with Yemen's internationally recognized government.

This development has raised concerns that Yemen could be pulled into the wider US-Iran war, as Iran-backed Houthis gain control over key infrastructure. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is an alternative route for Saudi oil exports, and its importance has increased following Iran's blockade of the nearby Strait of Hormuz.

Saudi Arabia, a close US ally, has responded with airstrikes across four Yemeni provinces, while the Houthis have launched dozens of ballistic missiles and drones at four cities in Saudi Arabia. The conflict has also resulted in a humanitarian toll, with thousands of civilians displaced and nearly 200 killed in recent fighting.

A UN envoy to Yemen described the situation as a return to war, with 377,000 people estimated to have died between 2014 and late 2021 due to the conflict. The renewed fighting has also raised concerns about civilian casualties, with many having already been displaced multiple times before.
