Houthis Seize Red Sea Islands, Escalating Conflict Over Oil Shipping Routes
The Houthi rebels in Yemen have gained significant ground by seizing two strategic islands in the Red Sea, Greater and Lesser Hanish. This move has bolstered their ability to control a key maritime shipping route, putting pressure on Saudi oil shipments and global oil supplies.
The Houthi officials said they took over the islands just as Saudi-backed government forces tried to claw back territory from the rebels' swift advances around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This strait is a crucial alternative to the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran effectively closed at the beginning of the war.
Iran's actions in closing the Strait of Hormuz had already caused significant disruptions to global oil supplies and prices. The Houthis' newest takeover has added further pressure on Saudi shipments, potentially giving Iran additional leverage in its war with the United States.
