Houthis Target Saudi East-West Pipeline Amid Escalating Mideast Tensions
The Houthi rebels in Yemen claim to have targeted Saudi Arabia's East-West oil transport pipeline, aiming at several key locations that connect eastern Saudi Arabia to the critical Red Sea oil export hub of Yanbu. This move is reportedly a response to what the Houthis describe as Saudi drone incursions into Yemeni airspace.
Saudi state oil giant Aramco has yet to comment on the matter. The Houthis' military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, stated that this operation was in retaliation for the alleged Saudi drone attacks.
The conflict between Iran-aligned forces and Saudi Arabia has been escalating since February, when the U.S. and Israel launched a war against Iran. In response to Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Arabia rerouted its crude output via the East-West pipeline to Yanbu. This decision was likely made to avoid disruptions to global oil supplies.
