Iceland Leads Global Energy Consumption Per Person
The countries that consume the most energy per person have been revealed in a recent ranking. Iceland tops the list, using an astonishing 744.9 gigajoules (GJ) of energy per person, nearly triple the U.S. figure of 270.2 GJ.
The top three countries are all small economies with high energy demands: Iceland's electricity comes almost entirely from domestic hydropower and geothermal energy, while energy-intensive industries such as aluminum smelting account for a significant share of the country's energy demand. Qatar (717.3 GJ) and Singapore (627.8 GJ) round out the top three.
These countries are followed by major oil and gas producers such as Kuwait (378 GJ), Trinidad & Tobago (358.2 GJ), Saudi Arabia (347.9 GJ), and Oman (314.9 GJ). The United States ranks 10th, with a significantly lower energy consumption of 270.2 GJ per person.
