IEA's Credibility Crisis: Fatih Birol's Reversal Sparks Concerns Over Oil and Gas Role

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has been a cornerstone of global energy policy for decades, providing governments with critical insights on energy supplies and trends. However, its credibility is now under scrutiny after Executive Director Fatih Birol's recent reversal on forecasts and policies regarding oil and gas.

In an interview in Montreal, Birol admitted that his organization has had to change its stance on the role of oil and gas in the global energy mix. He emphasized the need for countries like Canada to develop their resources but also find new export destinations.

This is a stark contrast to his statements in 2021 when he told The Guardian that there should be no new investments in oil, gas, and coal. However, this reversal is not an isolated incident, as Birol has a history of flip-flopping on his views.

The IEA's credibility issue stems from its funding structure, with the US holding the highest voting weight at around 25%. This has led to concerns about the agency's independence and objectivity. In fact, Saudi Arabia has even stopped using IEA data due to its concern over the influence of the largest funder, the US Administration.
