IEA's Flip-Flopping on Energy Forecasts Sparks Controversy

Critics are calling out the International Energy Agency (IEA) for its flip-flopping on energy forecasts and policies. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol's reversal on oil and gas development has sparked controversy, with some accusing him of selling the organization's independence to the highest bidder.

In a recent speech in Montreal, Birol stated that Canada needs to develop its oil and gas resources but also find new export destinations. This is a stark contrast to his comments in 2021 to The Guardian, where he said there should be 'no new investments in oil, gas, and coal from now, from this year.'

The IEA was formed in 1974 to provide energy import-dependent nations with an outlook on global energy supplies. However, the organization has lost credibility due to its inconsistent forecasting. Energy analysts often rely on data from OPEC instead of the IEA.

Birol's reversal is seen as a policy gymnastics by critics, who argue that it's a result of the organization being influenced by its largest funder, the U.S. Administration. Saudi Arabia has even stopped using input from the IEA due to concerns over its independence and technical assessment problems.
