IEEFA Report Raises Doubts Over Need for West Coast Pipeline
A new report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) questions whether Canada's proposed $43 billion West Coast pipeline is necessary, given existing pipelines and cheaper expansion projects.
The report argues that the pipeline 'is unlikely to be needed to meet capacity needs in the future,' citing global energy transition trends that are driving down oil prices and making the project riskier.
The pipeline, proposed by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and supported by Prime Minister Mark Carney, is expected to cost $43 billion and transport a million barrels of oil per day to the West Coast.
