Imperial Oil Fined $85,849.19 for Alberta Oil Sands Site Breach
Imperial Oil has been fined C$120,000 ($85,849.19) by an Alberta court for breaching environmental regulations at its Kearl oil sands site.
The fine relates to a wastewater overflow incident on February 4, 2023, in which water spilled from a drainage pond but did not enter any nearby rivers.
According to the company, no adverse impacts have been detected on local wildlife and monitoring data is being shared with Indigenous communities.
The Canadian oil producer has taken steps to prevent similar incidents, including reprogramming equipment and updating sediment management processes.
