India Accelerates PNG Adoption Amid Middle East Supply Risks
India is accelerating its adoption of piped natural gas (PNG) to reduce reliance on volatile LPG imports and mitigate energy supply risks stemming from rising geopolitical instability in the Middle East. The government has directed a shift of 2.1 million households to PNG to cut financial losses on state-run fuel companies.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has initiated a rapid transition plan, which includes mandating a switch for households in areas where pipeline infrastructure is already set up. This effort aims to prevent households from keeping both LPG and PNG connections in these regions.
By encouraging households to switch to PNG, the government hopes to lower the need for expensive fuel subsidies and reduce the national energy import bill. The regulatory tailwinds for City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies are expected to increase volume growth as more homes migrate to the grid.
