The Indian government has approved GOBARdhan, a National Circular Bioenergy Scheme, to fuel clean energy and rural growth. The scheme aims to increase domestic Compressed Biogas (CBG) production nearly tenfold by providing assured demand, remunerative pricing, capital assistance, and pipeline infrastructure support.

GOBARdhan will be administered by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and will have a total outlay of ₹23,731 crore from FY 2026-27 to FY 2035-36. The scheme's six integrated components include assured CBG off-take, stable CBG pricing framework, capital assistance, development of pipeline infrastructure, credit guarantee, and technology development.

The government hopes that GOBARdhan will not only reduce India's dependence on imported fossil fuels but also create a vibrant circular bioeconomy across the country. The scheme is expected to generate opportunities in feedstock supply, transportation, plant operations, and organic manure production while supporting cleaner waste management and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
