India Blends 20% Ethanol into Petrol Five Years Ahead of Schedule
India has achieved its goal of blending 20% ethanol into petrol, five years ahead of schedule. The target was originally set for 2030 but was accelerated to 2025.
The country's ethanol production capacity has expanded significantly over the past decade, increasing from around 38 crore litres in 2014 to 661.1 crore litres by June 2025. This growth has helped create a larger domestic biofuel industry and increased demand for agricultural feedstocks used to manufacture ethanol.
According to the government, India has saved approximately ₹1.36 lakh crore by reducing its requirement for imported crude oil through ethanol blending. The programme has also generated substantial economic benefits for farmers, with around ₹1.18 lakh crore paid to them through the ethanol ecosystem.
